Abstract: Abstract: In the year 1925, with its hold on power now consolidated, the Fascist regime adopted a
new approach to the cinema. Since then propaganda, control, censure and a variety of incentives
were constantly interwoven. The film industry was identified as a key sector for the regime, thanks
to the Duce’s immediate awareness of its importance in the spread of Fascism’s mythology and of
its role as a fundamental instrument in the organization of consensus. Within the framework of
the measures taken to re-launch, expand and protect this sector – which have no equal in other
industries for the abundance and continuity of the means allocated – the Cinecittà project was
inserted. It took form out of an encounter of various interests: investments in public works with
an anti-cyclic function; a new urban design for Rome to be carried out through detailed plans that
would highlight the city’s historical remains and create a monumental architecture for the “Urbe”,
thanks to the convergence of public and private energies.
