Abstract: The article explores the features of peri-urban agriculture in Rome. The structural dynamics of local farming system were analysed through the micro-data from the sixth Italian agriculture census, while the complex and evolving role of peri-urban agriculture was deepened through semi-structured interviews with selected stakeholders. The article shows that the development of peri-urban agriculture in Rome is increasingly focused on the concept of the multifunctionality, where farms supply new and different functions to society, usually accompanied by an innovative use of land, not necessarily devoted to the mere production of agricultural goods. This diversification process demonstrates not only the adaptive capacity of the local farming sector, but also the strong potential of peri-urban agriculture in providing a growing number of environmental and social services to urban dwellers.
