Abstract: This paper focuses on the evolution of food consumption in Milan in the second half of the 20th century. Its aim is to discover how the knowledge of the main trends in urban food consumption can add to our understanding of changing consumption patterns in Italy during the period in question.
The history of food consumption is analysed period by period and according to national and municipal data on the consumption of different food groups, which have been gathered from existing literature and from primary statistical sources. Findings include food consumption as an indicator of the main social and economic transformations that affected Milan in the second half of the 20th century, how the urban community provides an understanding of food security and inequality, the influence of industry and trade in shaping food consumption patterns.
Keywords: Urbanization; food consumption; food security; Milan, 20th century
