Abstract: The aim of this article is to explain the persistence of apprenticeship analyzing the Venetian case study. An overview of the primary sources is provided: apprenticeship agreements, guilds regulations and state normative. Resilience and path dependence are the theoretical concepts on which the paper is based. The persistence of this institution is explained by two factors: it was functional to the reproduction of the guilds system and it allowed a closer control of the job market.
