Abstract: During the Early Modern period, the production and the commerce of iron was quite relevant from a military and economic point of view. On one hand, in the European continent there was an increase in the request of iron, but on the other hand, its production remained quite localized, because of its availability and because of the presence of know how. Therefore, public institutions had to solve important problems: to assure the functioning of the iron sector and at the same time to maintain the product and the masters within the state borders. The analysis of this sector allows observing the importance of the institutions in regulating the market and the iron production. The article will analyze the role played by public institutions in affecting the growth of the iron sector in the Brescian area between the mid-sixteenth century and the end of the following one.
