Abstract: The paper illustrates the evolution of the production and retailing of wine in Eastern Lombardy from the early 19th century to the new millennium. Some important changes are highlighted concerning these topics, with improvements being particularly related to the quality of wine. In the early 19th century most winemakers produced low quality wine. Outbreaks of Powdery mildew, peronospora, and phylloxera seriously damaged vines and grapes and reduced the number of viticulturists and winemakers. The latter were forced to renew their vines and improve the quality of their wine. They gradually reduced the amount of land planted with vines and created consortiums for the protection and sale of their wine. In the 20th century, viticulture and winemaking benefited from the improvements in manufacturing techniques and transport networks. Since the 1960s the “enotechno-revolution” led the best winemakers to create new high quality sparkling wines and PDO wines which are now sold in the main international markets.
