Abstract: This study examines the political and electoral evolution of the Ostiense area of Rome during the post-war republican era. After the 1940s, throughout which a strong working-class character was maintained in the industrial zone which had previously developed around the area of Testaccio, a change came about in the 1950s and 1960s in the social composition of the community due to a large influx from areas to the south. The economic crisis and the acute political and social tensions of the 1970s created a deep ferment which was echoed in a growing level of abstention and absenteeism, and in the growth of extreme right-wing parties. During the 80s and 90s the area began to resemble other parts of the city, having lost it’s working-class character in favor of a more uniform middle-class one.
