Abstract: Spanish ambassador Pietro Antonio D'Aragona’s role in 1664 in the execution of a statue of Philip IV for the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the focus of this article. Working from new archival sources, the essay analyses the motives that prompted the ambassador to use an imperial image and the statue's role in its relationship to other sculptoreal works of the period.
