Abstract: THE RETRACTION OF THE BRIEF ABOLISHING THE SOCIETY OF JESUS: POLITICAL COMMUNICATION AND STRATEGIES OF FORGERY During the event following the abolition of the Society of Jesus (1773) and the Conclave for the election of Pope Pius VI (1774), a forged retraction of the decree abolishing the Jesuit order circulated in Rome and at several European courts. This essay traces the genesis of the forgery and the strategies for spreading the texts within the renewed framework of late 18th century political debate and public opinion.
