Abstract: IACP Pineto is a public housing estate placed in the western quarter of Rome, within the urban area of Valle Aurelia. It has been designed from 1971 to 1982 in order to host about 4,500 inhabitants, most of them coming from Borghetto dei Fornaciari, an informal settlement placed near the historical furnaces of Valle dell’Inferno. Such as the most famous housing projects built up by the IACP in those years - Spinaceto, Corviale and Laurentino 38 - Pineto was meant to represent a model of residential development. Referring to the first plan of social housing of Rome in 1964 (PEEP ), it has been conceived to go further the spontaneous urban growth, by bringing together houses, facilities and public services in one autonomous estate. Since its design phase, Pineto has been subject of several variations, debates and disputes among residents, IACP and the Municipality. In fact, the case of Pineto belongs to a period of the last century urban history of Rome that has been characterized by utopian leap and civic engagement. Such a fundamental period left to the city a series of imposing housing districts that today, despite not being classifiable as “monuments”, are effectively becoming a piece of modern heritage.
