Abstract: This article looks at the activities of an association that was unique in the Italy of the postwar years, the Italian Women’s Centre [il Centro Italiano Femminile]. These activities took a variety of forms: from assistance for families and for young children living in poverty, to the promotion of women in politics and campaigns to encourage people to vote; the defence of democratic principles, set out in the association’s statute, was a principle characteristic of the Centre’s activities, and it was able to rely on a large membership base with representatives in small towns meaning that it’s influence was not limited to the large cities.
