Abstract: For the Christian Democrat party the 1946-7 local elections in Rome represented a political ‘laboratory’. Forced into a cohabitation with the left wing parties of the tripartite government that was formed in the aftermath of the referendum of June 2nd 1946, the Christian Democrats were able to take advantage of Rome’s two-round electoral system to develop a strategy that would allow them, in the second half of 1947, to lay the foundations for a centrist political style.
