Abstract: This article explores the origins of Rome’s Centrale del Latte milk producer and its transformation
from a small council-owned plant selling condensed and diluted condensed milk,
which was for the most part imported from Lombardy, to an autonomous municipalised
company at the end of the 1950s, representing the first example in Italy of municipalisation
of the entire milk production cycle right up to the distribution phase.
