Abstract: In the years between the two world wars, somewhat later than other large Western cities, a formal and systematic process of social distribution began to take place in the expanding territory of Rome. An urban patchwork that, especially from the 1930s, came to identify the character of the city: many different kinds of urban spaces represented as many urban identities. The article presents an overview of this evolution as it threads through the fascist, wartime, and post-war periods.
