Abstract: This article illustrates how the ‘environmental discontinuity’ connected to the fascist ‘general land reclamation’ of the Pontine marshes did not lead to any notable short or medium term employment opportunities for the populations of the Lepini-Ausoni hills, apart from the many (but temporary) jobs arising from the ambitious drainage operations of the Piscinara area. With the demise of a series of agricultural, pastoral, fishing, and forestry activities connected to the ‘marshlands economy’ the area effectively became a workforce exporter. This hypothesis is supported by a number of statistical surveys regarding the demographics of the area in the periods before, during, and after the drainage operations.
