Abstract: FROM HOUSING TO PUBLIC WORKS: CONSTRUCTION ENTERPRISES AND INDUSTRY IN FASCIST ROME The growth of the building trade in the city and its urban transformations strengthened the primacy of the building industry as the main economic sector of the capital. This essay reviews this process from the mid 1920s to the dawn of World Was Two and analyzes the evolution of the entrepreneurial world both with regard to housing and public works. It focuses on the changes in strategy and placement of enterprises in different situations. Particular attention is paid to public works contracts and the participation in these of Roman enterprises. Understanding the various contracts which were won by Roman building companies allows us to measure and evaluate their ability to compete not only within the city or province, but also in the greater national context. The general picture is also compared to data from a major Roman building company, Provera e Carrassi. This allows us to clearly identify how these enterprises negotiated the market and to understand the importance of the system of relations and the consolidation of these relations with the different contracting centers.
