Abstract:  A SIENESE GROCER AND THE CHURCH OF SANTA CATERINA IN VIA GIULIA. REFLECTIONS ON PROCUREMENT AND COLLECTION BY CRAFTSMEN AND SMALL ENTREPRENEURS IN EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ROME On February 22, 1603 a contract was signed between the grocer Marcantonio Ciappi and the Bolognese painter Riccardo Sasso for the decoration of the counter façade of the Chiesa Nazionale dei Senesi. The recovery of this deed has given us new information on the decoration of the Church of Santa Caterina in Via Giulia in the seventeenth century which was destroyed during restoration carried out in the eighteenth century. Moreover, it permits us to understand the grocer’s personality and we can use this as a starting point for a brief investigation into the goods of craftsmen and entrepreneurs working in Rome in the seventeenth century.
