Abstract:  THE CARDINAL VICAR’S TRIBUNAL AND THE CITY. BRIEF OBSERVATION ON THE WORK OF NICOLO’ ANTONIO CUGGIO’ The Cardinal Vicar’s Tribunal disciplined vast sectors of city life. I intervened in the general economy and in individual estates, in the social and associative sectors and the educational and religious fields. It amassed large quantities of documents, most of which still be studied, which provide new historiographic perspectives and interesting research possibilities for a more direct observation of the public side of city life. In this respect, the work of Nicolò Antonio Cuggiò, secretary to the tribunal during the first half of the eighteenth century, is fundamental and teeming with information. Pending a complete study of its sources and the publication of a critical edition, I have provided a brief overview of the tribunal’s offices and its duties.
