Abstract: Shops and markets of Naples are among the many important features of Southern Italy in the Quattrocento which have long been neglected. The purpose of the present study is to examine this historiographical aspect by means of a case study of a specific group of documents to be found among the original parchments of the Monastery of San Domenico Maggiore, now held in the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria, relating to the so called apothecae which belonged to the king and to the nobles of the socalled Seggio of Nido. The apothecae were properties which had a high commercial value and which thus represented one of the major sources of income of the urban elite belonging to the Neapolitan Seggi. Through the San Domenico parchments it is possible to have an idea of the physical appearance of the Neapolitan apothecae during the second half of the Quattrocento, and to make some preliminary observations on the relation between the shops and the residences of the elite of the Seggio di Nido. The documents prove that the apothecae were not to be found within the actual area of the Seggio of Nido, where the nobles who owned them lived, but were located in the mercantile centre of the city, between the port and the market, that is, in the area which developed in the late medieval period and is named in the documents as iunctura civitatis. As commercial premises with a high monetary value, the apothecae were central to the economy of the nobles of Nido. The profits from the apothecae came from the rental of those premises, where the actual commercial or manufacturing activity of the shop was owned by the tenant. As well as being one of the main sources of income for the nobility of the Seggio, it also appears that the profits the apothecae were one of the principal methods of such nobles of paying for masses or financing the erection of sepulchral monuments and altars within the church San Domenico
