Abstract: Abstract: Between 1848 and 1875, tourism began to contribute to the increase in general mobility. The use of natural resources for therapeutic and recreational purposes was a phenomenon that spread throughout continental Europe: in the places of water and baths men and women practiced sociability, experimented and approved patterns of consumption, defined personal identities, cultural, national. In recent studies in the history of tourism the history of thermalism is probably the richest trend. This essay traces the first stages of modernization of Casamicciola, a locality of the island of Ischia with thermal resources and, through the analysis of the guestbook of one of the first hotels, tries to define the characters of those who stayed there for pleasure and for therapy between 1864 and 1883. Keywords: History of Tourism; Island of Ischia; Thermal Bath; Nineteenth-Century History; Social History.
