Abstract: Built in Rome during the first years of Fanfani’s housing program, the INA Casa Tiburtino area represents one of the most famous examples of residential architecture of the postwar period. The quality of Ludovico Quaroni and Mario Ridolfi’s project has been frequently examined but, overall, the social composition of the area and the living habits are issues which have been often overlooked by historians. Using different types of sources – archival documents, oral interviews - this paper examines which role the public authorities (as Gestione Ina Casa, contracting entities), the social services and the inhabitants have played in shaping the characteristic of the INA Casa Tiburtino neighborhood. It observes, at the same time, the privatization process, started in the mid-Sixties, that transformed this residential social units into private housing.
