Abstract: Much has been written about Park Guell project failure, and actually the garden city planned by Eusebi Guell led to a complete naught…” – this is the sour admission of Juan José Lahuerta, acknowledging the broken dream of the famous patron, which in the 1900 would have liked to bestow on Barcelona offering to the city a marvellous garden suburb, an outstanding residential district “which would have been, still today, a source of inspiration for the future developments of architecture”. The “Ciudad Guell”, one of the major example of Antoni Gaudi’s geniality and direct descendant of successful landscaping intuitions coming from England, is characterized by an unequalled plan. It represents a perfect mix of urban area and park, equipped with all the amenities necessary for a rich residential community. It shows a unique synthesis of functionality and artistic value, capable of offering a valid option for those who wanted to run away from the urban decay. The essay aims to understand why that excellent urban plan has been delivered to history as a failure and whether it should be attributed to Gaudi’s quirky originality, or there are other reasons behind such a weighty naught.
