Abstract: Gyumri is a military town, rose on the ancient village of Kumajri between 1828-1831 when Armenia was annexed from Russia. The military engineers planed the fortified system and even the new town, based on the grid. Gyumri changed its name in Aleksandropol’ during 1837, and it assumed a new face in the nineteenth century. It became one of principal centre of market in Caucasus and its architecture and cultural life got up. In 1924, during the Soviet era, Aleksandropol’ assumed the name of Leninakan and became an important heavy industrial centre. Its story moved tragically when it was hit by an earthquake in 1988; about three years late, Leninakan took a name of Gyumri the second town of the independent Armenian State.
