Abstract: Venice doesn’t need a special and dedicated city museum: it is spread out in the historic city herself and it is simply made by the thirty museums or similar plants open for the world’s visitors. But the new «continental» city in the mainland (terraferma), the town of Mestre and neighbourhood, was the place of the history of Venice during the twentieth century: a big harbour, the massive industrial district, a growing intercontinental airport, many motorways, a deep urban sprawl, everything in the modern life activities were managed during the last seventy years by a half million inhabitants (200.000 in the administrative territory of the Comune di Venezia) resident in the area. A project about a museum (or a centre of activity in the field traditionally reserved to museums) is under study by the Fondazione di Venezia and this paper presents the main items of the project.
