Abstract: Such a project concerns one of the leading «art cities» of Italy that is Verona, endowed with a wide and diversified network of museums.
Between 2000 and 2003, a museum scheme was drawn up by a private association, the Amici di Castelvecchio e dei Civici Musei d’Arte di Verona «Friends of Castelvecchio and the Civic Art Museums of Verona».
Once drawn out, the scheme for the new museum was offered it to the City Council. It consists of sixteen sections, one of which has been carefully studied. In any of them, the chronological approach must interact with the thematic one. Despite its detailed definition, the project is, however, far to be implemented.
The new museum is supposed to be housed in a nineteenth-century barrack located on the top of hill where – according to tradition – the first urban nucleus was settled in pre-Roman age. From this strategic standpoint, it is possible to outlook the entire city, reading its development step by step and upgrading the system of visual relations among the surrounding areas: historic districts on the left bank of the Adige, hills, medieval walls, Austrian forts, archaeological museum.
Conceived as a description of social, artistic and cultural history of Verona, the new museum is thought as a spectacular introduction to the entire city and its artistic and naturalistic resources. It could also allow the gathering and highlighting of works now spread in different civic collections. It is intended to prolong the tourist stay by expanding and structuring the city’s museum offer, and also to offer a place for residents to spend their leisure time.
The museum is presumed to be in the middle of a new city park of 20,000 square metres. Therefore, due to its exceptional potential, such a new institution is envisaged as a bridge between past and future; the clue of an open, dynamic, interactive and appealing system.
