Abstract: The systematic study of the city through archaeology in the last thirty years introduced a new approach to urban history and had a fundamental role in bringing city museums up to date. The constantly rising numbers of urban sites interested by archaeological excavations implies that new forms of communication of the archaeological research have to found: the presentation of its results by museum displays strictly linked with the urban territory seems to be a valid alternative to the material conservation. In Venice urban archaeology is a relatively recent discipline, but it is now getting more and more important thanks to the new heritage protection laws that impose a preventive archaeological investigation of any site subjected to redevelopment. In last the fifteen years nearly eight hundred sites have been dug, producing an extraordinary wealth of materials. In order to give to a such documentation a destination, an innovative museum dedicated to the history of the city and the lagoon reconstructed by archaeological data is in projet: it will be realized by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici of Veneto and it will have a multi-location structure.
