Abstract: Is it possible today to establish a steady relationship between heritage and contemporary urban environment? Starting from the idea of an urban eco-museum, we consider in this paper innovative forms of city fruition, able to affect the process of urban planning and building. In such a comprehensive cultural offer, many aspects have to be included, that are mainly different scales of public action – local, regional, governmental – together with private forms of intervention. In many European cities, historical centres are incapsulating the awareness of existing values tightly connected to the past. They are still keeping long-lasting signs of former communities together with the sense of place or the genius loci. For the sake of a new awareness, we need to proceed further the mere understanding and gathering of data concerning the local heritage only. We have to elaborate new values which can interact with a contemporary society. In this perspective, we try to illustrate the urban eco-museum project as it as been suggested for the city of Cagliari.
