Abstract: Rome, city of thousand years palimpsest, not only lived upon itself, but also off of and inside itself. It is then worth thinking of a Museum of Rome (or for Rome) better than of Rome as museum of itself: it also stimulates a series of thoughts concerning display, methodological approaches and aims. Historical data are the coherent and concrete contents: they emerge through an archaeological and historical research, which reconstructs any shape of the urban area and the events of people living there. These are respectively the case and the contents of a city museum. The essential methodological premises are the rejection of any hierarchical investigation, the interaction between different system of sources, selection of data, contextual better than typological account, the application of new means of communication to overcome the reticence in expressing themselves of manufacts. Aims of a city museum are, indeed, to communicate history from a critical point of view: only then minds will be capable of modernize past urban material and ideal stratifications and compare them with the present surfaces.
