Abstract: Since the Antiquity literature has sporadically described Anacapri, promoting a landscape rich in contrasts, alterning the image of a fruitful and verdant territory to a stony and inhospitable one. It deals with some literary topoi, taken by writers in the XVI century and progressively enriched in litery production in the following epochs. Although to these representations often are not estraneus political and religious influences, it is certain that the Anacapri’s habitat always has some criticisms, among which the relative shortage of water. The analysis conducted on the basic of historical sources, besides partially confirming the brittleness of this habitat, it also underlines points of strength and qualities of it, that historically have been exploited and optimized by the anacaprese society. Adaptability to its own natural context, abilities to optimize natural sources and obstinacy in the equipment through building infrastructures to guarantee water self sufficiency are the principal characteristics that countersign Anacapri. In this perspective, episodes of disastrous lack of water appear sporadic as rare, and local administration also seems to make forehead at the right moment.
