Abstract: Starting from the second half of the nineteenth century, the identity of the border town of Gorizia shows peculiar properties, deriving from its geopolitical position as from the different interactions occurring with multiple institutional contexts, inside which the city was placed. Until recently, the different ethnic groups within the urban community reacted by showing a remarkable sense of adaptation, sometimes accompanied by opportunism, and developing particular forms of self-protection from the point of view of the economic circuits, as from those of identity and culture.
