Abstract: The lack of attention regarding the architectural heritage in Chilean cities has been an argument of debate inside the local societies. The heritage preservation legislation in Chile has created massive problems that have allowed degradation, neglect, and demolition of architectural heritage sites. The consequences of the recent urban renovation of Santiago’s historical center, which has been operating since the nineties, proves that the current legislation is not enough and that the policies for recovering urban areas has been challenging for local authorities.
